FRENCH CURRICULUM LIST This is a list of options to explore when choosing a French curriculum. You can use curriculum as a starting off point and add supplements to make the language learning process fun, enjoyable, memorable, and effective for your child’s education. You can homeschool foreign language! This is a long French Curriculum list, but it covers options from preschool to high school. The cost of the curricula varies from free to what most homeschool families would probably consider expensive.
Curricula on this list may be non-traditional, traditional, or any variation in between. The purpose of this list is to provide options that can either be taught by a non-speaker of that language, or a class taught by a proficient speaker. Choose a curriculum that works for you and add supplements, or skip a curriculum and make your own course of study using supplementary options. Online Lessons. There are enough lessons for 180 days of study consting of 45 minutes per day. The first 15 lessons are free. This is available in Spanish or French.
The introductory video says that the method seem bizarre and unusual. I’m still looking into this program.

The program is reasonably priced for how long it takes.
There is a detailed review of this curriculum at Cathy Duffy’s website. Level is for grades K-3. The Easy Spanish is also available. Non-traditional (predominantly). Free (some might be free if you have Amazon Prime).
Younger Students. Older Students (songs, but DVDs may be rejected as babyish) is a DVD and CD based immersion program. For younger children. There are some planned lessons are available. My kids love these, especially the songs, and they’re really well done. Available in French or Spanish.
The homeschool lesson plans:. Non-traditional (predominantly). Very well-known curriculum that offers many languages. Online features are available in the newest versions, but only for ages 13 and up, and there is an additional monthly subscription cost. Voice recognition issues for younger children with high voices can be frustrating. Installation of older versions has been a technological headache for me.
The Rosetta Stone does not explain grammar, context, idioms, or culture, and lacks the relationship factor that builds language acquisition. It’s also easy for a kid to fake their way through it.We own multiple languages of The Rosetta Stone, and use them, but only as part of our lessons. The versions available have changed over the years.

The online courses work differently from the paper-based. This school does not seem to have live classes like some other online schools.
You buy the course and have 12 months from the date of activation to complete it (or 6 months for a “half” course). One of the few options for a non-traditional curriculum if you would like your child to take an accredited course. Their online world language courses are through The Rosetta Stone. They expect Levels 1 and 2 of The Rosetta Stone to be equal to one year of high school instruction, and Levels 3 and 4 to be equal to the next year. Level 5 is equal to one semester.
The cost at the time of this writing is $250 per year as an independent study student. This course could also be an option for those who want to take an unusual language, such as Arabic, Chinese, Dutch, Tagalog, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindi, Irish, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Farsi, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, and Vietnamese. This could be an option for a student who wants an accredited high school diploma but does not want to have to take a traditional foreign language course. There are no workbooks or textbooks through the online course, and I do not see an advantage to taking the course through this school over buying Rosetta Stone on your own, unless you want your child to have an accredited high school diploma. They also offer correspondence courses in French (two years), and Latin (1 year).
The cost of an accredited diploma here is a bargain at the time of this writing, at $2250 for four years of paper-based courses, and $3600 for four years of online courses. Their website has this to say about their diploma and college acceptance: “Some states, such as New York, however, have public universities which will not accept students holding a distance education diploma, and these public universities will require such students to take the GED, TASC or another high school equivalency exam to gain admission. We suggest that you review the admissions standards with the college of your choice prior to enrolling and contact our Guidance Department if you have questions or need further assistance.”. Non-traditional (predominantly) Time4Learning uses The Rosetta Stone, if you are a member there you can add it on for an additional fee.
Non-traditional (predominantly) Ouino is another program that is similar in concept to The Rosetta Stone. Non-traditional (predominantly) Living Language is similar in concept to The Rosetta Stone, but is less commonly known. It has many, many languages available, including ASL. There is online support available as a subscription.
You can download some free resources for some languages. Non-traditional (predominantly). Younger Students. Non-traditional (predominantly). Introductory Course Audio only, you relax and listen and repeat.
(you may also be able to get this for a discount through Audible, or borrow it from your local library). A beginning curriculum, with a very small vocabulary, and useful as an introduction to a language. This could be used to develop a better accent because it is listening-only. Non-traditional (predominantly). Younger Students This is a cartoon with some clips of real life people and items. We have the Chinese and Arabic DVD versions and our library has other DVD versions.
The DVDs have been free on Amazon Prime in the past. It didn’t hold the attention of any of my kids, ages 3-10 I have tried it out on.
It’s got a very small vocabulary. There are downloadable lesson plans but the ones I have are geared towards a group of children, and assume that you speak the language enough to interact with children.
Non-traditional (predominantly). Introductory Cours Audio only, and like Pimsleur, you relax and listen and repeat. My children could not understand the speaker’s French accent when he spoke English. I had no trouble understanding him and I enjoyed it. A beginning curriculum, with a small vocabulary. Could be used to develop a better accent because it is listening-only.
High School. Free. Older Students The website appears to be designed to help traditional school foreign language teachers. There is an option to choose things that go with the Avancemos curriculum.
The choices available seem to be geared for practicing things that the teacher already taught the student. French, German, Italian, Korean, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish, – Spanish and Korean have the most categories of choices, with activities and listening include. It is a site built with contributions from language teachers and is growing. You can build your own curriculum from this site, but it will take work on your part. There are lots of free printable flash cards, so you could print those and then have children play the games that go with them. There are also conjugation charts.
Having those charts could help you look up YouTube videos that sing through French verb conjugations. The games are not better than what you can find on apps, but you have more control over what you assign. I find the French verb activities to have useful printables for making your own curriculum.
I would use this along with a non-traditional curriculum to check for gaps in knowledge of the most common words. Non-traditional (predominantly).Younger Students.Older Students is for grades K-4. The complete set has 21 French learning lessons, 11 French learning songs for kids, 80 French learning videos for kids, 140 interactive French online games for kids, 500 basic French words, French picture dictionary for kids, French activity book and flash cards to download.

Headventureland is a website with non-traditional supplements designed to go with this program and others from Classical Academic Press. Most supplements are for Latin at this time. If you’re unfamiliar with ACE, it uses multiple small workbooks that the student works through at their own pace. There are DVDs to go along with the lessons.
The focus is on reading and writing. Spanish, French, Greek. The Spanish curriculum is different from the others. Check to see how many years are currently available in each language. High School age. Traditional (predominantly).

It says that it can be used for elementary school and up, but I do not think it would hold a young child’s attention well. Younger Students website says the product uses the Thibaut Technique®. The website also says “Professor Toto is a series of multi-award winning language education tools for ages 2 to 8. Animated DVDs, song-filled CDs, and colorful workbooks” The website also says that the curriculum is great for ages K-6. It’s a cartoon. The content is enough to be an introduction to a language. Chinese, Italian, Spanish, French, German.

I have not had the opportunity to try out Speekee, and I have not heard reviews of its effectiveness. Alpha Omega Publishing – publishes Switched On Schoolhouse, Lifepac, and Monarch (which is online). High School. Online classes. Younger Students. Older Students Switched On Schoolhouse offers elementary French and Spanish, one level of middle school-high school French, two levels of high school Spanish, two levels of high school French. There are interactive immersion type situations, plus explicitly taught grammar.
There is automatic grading, but beware of students faking their way through. Monarch is supposed to be similar but is an online subscription rather than purchasing it outright. Lifepac is the older version. Traditional (predominantly). Free.

You can choose just the textbook and workbook, or you can add DVDs or an online class. Non-traditional (predominantly). Younger Students This is a cartoon designed to teach young children a foreign language. It’s been around for over 25 years and has now been redone. Their website says, “Developed by the BBC, MUZZY’s simple and effective program works by teaching through fun and animated stories featuring Muzzy and friends. These stories use the natural immersion method, which is modeled after the way children learn their first language.” I think that children watching the cartoon as part of a lesson with direct instruction could be effective.
I do not think that just having your children watch these DVDs without any additional instruction is likely to be effective. My children did not manage to pick up anything from either the French or Mandarin Chinese DVDs until we sat down and watched them together. I have used older copies that I checked out from the library, and we have watched the newer series samples on YouTube.
The older DVD and CD versions are ok. They’re cartoons talking, rather than actual people. My kids first called the old cartoons “creepy,” but now they love to watch Muzzy.
I haven’t had a chance to use the newer versions, which seem to be updated cartoons. The first lessons that I was able to preview had almost the same of content, with small changes. The voice actors were clearer in the newer version.
The old version has two levels. In the new version, I can only find one level available, but I’m not sure if it covers as much content.
I prefer seeing an actual person talking because facial expression and mouth movement contribute to learning a language, but cartoons can be redubbed in many languages, which is probably why cartoons were used. You can buy a new DVD set for $168 at this time, or get an online subscription for about $9.95/month. The DVD purchase includes one year of online subscription.
The online subscription has additional features. The additional online features are 190 online games, 101 Vocabulary Builder Videos, 23 Original Sing Alongs, Printable Activities, Recording Studio, eBook, Online Picture Dictionary, Online Activity Book, Parents Guide, and Weekly Email Lessons. If these features are something that you and your child enjoy, they could go a long way towards making this effective. It’s available in Spanish, French, Chinese, Italian, German, and Korean. Public school online settings don’t have a good track record of success, in general, but I am listing this so you are aware of what kinds of options might be available in your state. Has multiple options for curriculum and supplements. A yearly membership could be a good budget choice if you can use one of the foreign language curricula options.
